10 years Day-ahead market: the segment accounts for almost 2/3 of the power exchange trading

The day-ahead market segment on Independent Bulgarian Energy Exchange (IBEX) marks its 10th anniversary, being the first market segment on the organized power exchange in Bulgaria which laid the foundations of electricity trading in a transparent, market-based and publicly traceable mechanism.

‘For the past 10 years the day-ahead segment has established itself as a key platform which provides reliable price signals and guarantees liquidity on the electricity market. As a power exchange operator, IBEX has been consistently developing its rules, products and infrastructure so that they meet market participants needs and follow market dynamics. The size of the market segment today, both in terms of volumes and active members, comes as a result of the efforts of the whole market and our commitment to transparent, competitive and predictable trading.’ – the CEO of IBEX, Dian Boev, said.

The active market participants on the segment are currently 150, while at the beginning of January 2016 they were 21. The traded volumes have also increased: 4 369.2 MWh were traded on the day-ahead market for delivery day 20th January 2016 compared to 104 294.85 MWh for delivery day 20th January 2026 which is 24 times more.

In the period 2016-2025 the total traded volume on this market segment amounted to 175.6 TWh (175 578 181.08 MWh) which is around two thirds of all power exchange trading on IBEX.
